Kamado Joe's Beginning
The concept for Kamado Joe began in 2008 when Bobby Brennan and Kerry Coker were interested in leaving the corporate world and starting a business together. The first step was to meet with a business manager who gave them a piece of advice that they took to heart, "Whatever business you decide to start, choose something you both already enjoy doing."

They both shared a passion for outdoor cooking and they had been Big Green users for years. Bobby and Kerry began to discuss the improvements that could be made to their ceramic grills.

The four areas of improvement they focused on were the hardware, wood accents, cart and assembly. They decided that the hardware and accents should be able to better withstand outdoor elements of heat, cold, humidity and sunlight. With that in mind all the metal parts were made of 304 stainless steel, galvanized steel and cast iron. Uncoated parts would be 304 stainless steel and all others would be powder coated.

Finished bamboo was chosen for the handle and side shelves, because of its superior weather resistance. Called "nature's steel", bamboo is durable, water and mildew-resistant. Another upgrade was the redesign of the grill cart. The two-piece design includes greater sturdiness by extending the width between the legs along with a set of locking casters.

How We Got Our Name
The name "Kamado Joe" was created based on a desire for a simple name that would be unique and memorable. The word "Kamado" is the Japanese word for "stove" and has become the generic word for today's ceramic grills. Kamados are over 3,000 years old and were used in Asian homes to cook and heat their homes. The name "Joe" was inspired by the briefly famous gentleman, "Joe the Plumber" during the 2008 presidential race. "Joe" has a positive and friendly connotation and that's how Bobby and Kerry wanted their customers to feel about their company and its products.
