What is the difference between a Kamado Joe ClassicJoe and other ceramic grills?
If you cook a steak on any ceramic grill and with all things being equal, it will taste the same. However, there are two important differences between Kamado Joe ceramic grills and other brands; quality and price. We use high-fire ceramic glaze, 304 stainless steel, powder coated galvanized steel, powder coated cast iron and bamboo for our hardware and wood accents. Other brands use high temperature paint, painted cold rolled steel and cypress. Compared to the most popular brands, the average retail price of a Kamado Joe ceramic grill can be as much as $150 lower.
What are the advantages of a Kamado Joe ceramic grill over other grilling methods?
To see a side-by-side comparison, view our Online Grilling Guide.
Don't charcoal grills like Kamado Joe ceramic grills take longer to preheat than gas grills?
No. Gas grills take 10-15 minutes to preheat before cooking. That's the same time it takes to light and preheat a Kamado Joe ceramic grill. The 100% Natural Lump Charcoal for our grills heats rapidly. We are commonly mistaken for briquette charcoal grills, which can take 20 minutes or longer for the briquettes to be ready. To learn more view our Online Grilling Guide.
What kind of charcoal should I use?
We recommend Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal. There are other lump charcoal brands that do a good job cooking as well. Some are known for their high heat, which is good for grilling and others have a long burn time, which is favorable for smoking. We selected our charcoal for its balanced blend of high heat and extended burn time.
Can I use starter fluid or charcoal briquettes?
No. We strongly recommend that you do not use lighter fluid (or any combustible fluid), charcoal briquettes or instant-light briquettes. Combustible chemicals will be absorbed by the ceramic material and add a distasteful flavor to your food. Standard briquettes (not instant light) can be used, but they burn at a much lower temperature and burn time than natural lump charcoal.
Can I leave my Kamado Joe grill uncovered if it is always outside?
Yes. Our grills are built to withstand normal weather conditions. We do offer a custom Grill Cover for added protection and extended storage.

There is mildew on the cooking grate and internal ceramics of my grill. What should I do?
If you do not use for grill for an extended period, it creates a moist dark environment that is susceptible to mildew. Your Kamado Joe ceramic grill can function as a self-cleaning oven. Simply heat your grill to 600°F for 15 minutes and allow it to cool down. If there is any residual ash from the burned off mold or mildew, use a plastic bristle brush to remove it.
I cannot get my ClassicJoe over 400°F, what is wrong?
There are two aspects of your grill that can prevent high temperatures: air flow or the amount of natural lump charcoal...or both. To learn more go to our Achieving High Temperatures page.
